Monica Lewinksy is reclaiming her reputation and her past with a new podcast, aptly titled “Reclaiming.” In her first episode released this week, she detailed the story of her public journey, starting as a White House intern to how she became an advocate for anti-bullying decades later.
At the time of the Clinton scandal, Lewinsky was 22 years old, facing public backlash from an entire country for having a relationship with not only a married man, but the most powerful man in the United States. Hateful comments, threats, and overt bullying was directed at her by anyone who had an opinion, causing her to step back from the public eye for years.
Her first step back surfaced in 2015 as a Ted Talk she did, talking about the scandal and her dedication to ending public shaming, online harassment, and bullying. In an interview with Rolling Stone, she said the idea for the podcast was inspired by Michelle Obama’s book “Becoming,” with each chapter, or episode, being a different part of her life that she will be “reclaiming.”
Although in the post #MeToo era people look at the Clinton scandal with a wildly different lens, it is still interesting to think about how the situation would have played out had it happened 20 years later. While there have been immense leaps of progress in the United States’ attitude toward women, there are still significant amounts of misogyny, particularly in heavily male-dominated fields such as politics.
Lewinsky’s podcast gives her something truly special that was lost nearly 30 years ago underneath insults and hatred: a voice.
